If you’ve ever pulled the case off a pillow and found those yellowed sweat stains underneath, you know exactly the feeling. For the longest time I thought those pillows were just done for. Then I figured out this simple washing method using a couple of things I already had in the laundry room, and now my pillows come out clean, fresh, and fluffy again with no expensive products at all. Don’t rush out and buy some pricey stain remover before you try this.
Here’s what I use:
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 2 tablespoons OxiClean or any oxygen-based bleach powder
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar (optional, in the fabric softener compartment)
- 1 clean tennis ball or a dryer ball
I start by tossing 2 tablespoons of baking soda straight into the washing machine drum, then I add 2 tablespoons of OxiClean right on top. If you want, you can pour a tablespoon of white vinegar into the fabric softener compartment, though this time around I skipped it. Then I drop a tennis ball or a dryer ball into the drum with the pillows. This little trick keeps the filling from clumping up into lumps while everything washes.

I always choose a delicate or gentle cycle for pillows. If the pillow is filled with synthetic fiberfill, I set the water temperature to 105°F. For down or feather pillows, a cooler 85 to 105°F is safer. I set the spin to around 800 to 1000 rpm, and once the cycle finishes I always run an extra rinse to make sure all the detergent is completely washed out.

Once the pillows were fully dry, they came out clean and the yellow stains were completely gone. I washed a second, smaller pillow the same way that was even more yellowed than the first, and honestly the result surprised me just as much. I’m not sure exactly what causes that kind of buildup deep in the filling, but I’d never seen stains quite that stubborn before, and this handled them.
So that’s how I wash my pillows now, without any expensive cleaning products. It’s simple, cheap, and gives a really good result, so I’ll happily keep using it from here on out.
